Reasons for Language Development Delay in Toddlers

One of the most common issues parents are worried about is their kids’ speech and language development. They spend much time together exercising, reading books, chanting rhymes, and singing songs. It’s ok when kids start saying the first words within the first years of life. But what if nothing works and kids won’t speak?

Let’s review some usual reasons:

1. Low development of mouth muscles or low face muscles tone.
2. Lack of concentration of auditory attention. Such a child does not understand long sentences or does not hear background noise.
3. Hearing problems.

When do you really need to start worrying?

- When your child pronounce the words so unclearly that you understand only half of them.
- When he doesn’t play and doesn’t interact with other children.
- When he does not understand or can’t answer simple questions.
- When he can’t find or name simple objects that surround him.
- When he can’t call someone from his family members.

If you found out some of these signs, see your pediatrician or speech therapist. But if the doctor can’t find anything unusual in your child’s development, you shouldn’t worry. Every child is unique and develops at his own pace. There are lots of cases when kids aged 3 don’t speak at all but later they start talking too much. So be patient and enjoy your child.
